Q& A

Question
I planted three hemlocks years ago to form a sight block from our driveway to our back yard. My intent was to let them grow and then trim them into a hemlock hedge.

Needless to say I never trimmed them and now they are about 20 feet tall. Can I still cut these back and shape them into a hedge? Or, am I better off starting over? If yes, how and when is the best time to do this?

Answer
About the hemlocks, you could top them now and prune the branch tips just as buds are swelling. Be aware that wooly adelgid is a deadly pest on hemlock and pretty sure to show up, so twice a year spraying is essential for keeping a hedge of hemlock around here (Connecticut). Think about that before you decide to keep or ditch the hedge.
