I planted several variegated privets last fall. They did great over the winter. Now they are loosing leaves. Is this common in the Spring? Leaves are light brown and falling off. Bare branches don't feel brittle so they are not dead yet. Help.

I've never grown a privet myself but, after doing a little research I've found that privets are appparently an evergreen in which case, no they should not lose their leaves.
Anyway check out this website as per the required nutrients of plants:
I would fertilize your privets with some liquid fish fertilizer to provide some nitrogen to promote the formation of leaves. The other nutrients available in the fish fertilizer will help to stabelize your plants
