I just came across the Helpful Gardener link in my search for information on my Forsynthia bushes. I'm not an experienced gardner by any means but have recently taken this up as a hobby. I had our new home professionally landscaped about a year ago and requested these bushes for their beautiful flowers. Unfortunately, I wasn't lucky enough to enjoy them bloom. After reading up on how to care for this type of bush I found that they bloom in early spring. I think I saw maybe one or two flowers spring up if that. Can someone please help me figure this out?

Welcome to the Helpful Gardener. It's nice to have you with us.
Forsythia shrubs bloom in early spring. Usually, the entire bush will be covered with little yellow flowers. The flowers bloom before the leaves emerge.
I'm not sure what your question is. There isn't any way that I'm aware of to make Forsythias bloom at any other time of the year. _________________ "Isn't it enough to see that a garden is beautiful without having to believe that there are fairies at the bottom of it too?" - Douglas Adams |

| That's just the issue, the bush did not bloom at all this spring. It was full of leaves but nothing else. |

Did you by any chance prune them in the fall or during winter, because if you did, you would have cut off the flower buds destined to flower in spring.
Other than insufficient sun exposure, that's all I can think of at the moment. Maybe you could post some photos of the shrubs and/or provide more info about where they are planted and the kind of care -- soil conditions, use of fertilizer, etc. -- used. |

Welcome to the forum! Glad you found us; hope you find it friendly and helpful. Agree with everything applestar said. Also if it was just planted a year ago, depending on what size shrub it was at that point, how well grown, etc they don't always bloom the first year. Take good care of it now and be patient and chances are next spring it will be covered in golden yellow blossoms! Forsythia is beautiful when it blooms.
But as applestar says, they do bloom on last year's wood, in other words it has already set now the buds for next spring. If you were to prune it now, you would be cutting those buds off, so no blooms next spring. If you need to prune them, you want to do it immediately after it blooms, before it has a chance to start setting next years buds. |
