Last year we planted two Endless Summer and one Buttons and Bows hydrangeas. We've got leaves on the Endless Summer and I'm beginning to worry that we see nothing on the Buttons and Bows, just a bunch of twigs left from the end of last season.
When should I start to see new growth? |

Oh my - you should see growth by now. I have two PeeGees that don't look like they survived their adventure, all my other hydrangeas and all of the hydrangeas at the garden center in Menlo have growth showing (they have their plants acclimated, so no greenhouse growing going on there).
I'll cross my fingers your Buttons & Bows just is having a late start, just as I am hoping my two baby PeeGees are doing! |

Oh well. That's not the answer I was looking for.
Fortunately I bought it at Pike's, and they'll take it back if it didn't survive the winter. |

Well, I dug that bad boy up on Saturday and took him back to Pikes.
No problem Mrs. Pixie... and just like that I had a new 5 gal. buttons and bows. Put it in the ground yesterday afternoon and we're off to the races.
Thanks for the input Grey!

Sounds like a good garden center; they make the Top 100 in GCM&M Magazine every year (best trade rag...)

Pike Family is a great nursery with a great return policy, but it doesn't hurt that we have a great relationship with the folks over there. Hubby and I go for a "walk" in the garden center at least once a week. We say "hi" to everyone there. We ask a lot of questions. Our daughter is well known and loved there, to the point that the manager literally denuded a tree of it's lemons to stuff daughter's backpack with them! Obviously, we spend a fair amount of money as well as time there.
My mom always said it was important to have more than a passing friendship with your butcher and fishmonger. (Honestly, she used to bake brownies for hers!) I agree with this advice, and I have since added my garden center manager to the list!
