I saw a few questions about transplanting but I'm not sure if the answers also apply to putting new lilacs in. Can they be grown from cuttings? If so, what is the right time of year to plant the cuttings? Do you usually start cuttings in water and watch for roots before planting?

Yes, lilacs can be grown from cuttings. You'll want to take softwood cuttings in the spring, perhaps around May or June. Treat them with a rooting hormone, and plant in a starting medium. I use sand for this, but other things may work as well, i.e. perlite, vermiculite, etc.

I have not started lilac shrubs, so this is about as far as I can take you in terms of instructions. This link, however, will take you to a thread by another member, who has successfully started lilacs from cuttings. Smile
