Well, all my summer harvest has been picked. Tomatoes galore, zuc's, red peppers, sunflowers, arugula, swiss chard, corn, broccoli. I pulled all the root balls out, now what do I do with the dirt. Cover with mulch, if so, what kind. Or wait until seedlings are ready to put in the ground. ?

What about the mulch, will hay work ok??
I HAVE an old edition of that book, it says the new edition 1969.haha Same stuff I'm sure.

Actually, sometime in the '90s, Sunset "discovered" that there were organic ways to fight insects, help plants grow, etc. I have the 7th ed. (2001); I was getting every other one until then.
The 8th ed., published in early 2008, changed formats from two to three columns per page, which to my eye makes the information very jumpy and visually difficult to follow. Even if I had been able to afford the 8th ed.--given the 7 years between it and the previous--I still wouldn't have purchased it.
I'm holding out for the 9th, whenever it's published.
My local public library has a circulating copy of the Sunset book. If yours does, too, you can look through it and see whether you'd like your own. Then you can search the used-book market for a 7th or even 6th edition, which are both pretty low cost about now, given the availability of the 8th ed.
I'm just hoping I can plant some rapini real soon; the heat wave this week doesn't look like promising planting weather to me, esp. for a cool-season veggie.

Cynthia, I think you've mentioned this book before. After reading your post this morning, I decided it might make nice winter reading. I found it on Ebay. I could get the 2001 edition for $7.50 including shipping. Is this the right book?

That's the one Stella. I believe the publisher is Sunset Books and the name of the book is "Western Gardener". I wish they had one that specialized for the midwest. Sunset Books has many other garden related books.

YES YES YES that's the one, and I see they have multiple copies! Sunset published the National Garden Book in 1997; they never updated it. But it did cover all of the 50 United States.

I got it. I pm'd Cynthia with its photo; she says it's the same edition she has. Good price, too. I can't wait until it gets here!
