Re: Help to start gardening and planting

It sounds like the gardener you hired did know what he was doing. He amended and pulled the weed and fertilized before planting. Different plants have different needs for water and it depends on how well your soil drains. The soil in the pots will not be the same as the one in the garden. Some of t...

Re: Anyone else keep financial track of how much you grow?

I am not good in calculating things, I just grow so I can save little money of what I buy, it may not save me much for one year or even two, but sure for long time it will show some saving, if I can grow tomatoes and onions and some herbs every year then I can save nearly $50-100 per year, we have t...

I bought two containers or as you call it window boxes so I can plant parsley seeds in one and mint seeds in the other one. Re: Help to start gardening and planting

I like your approach -- yes, gardening is a continuing cycle of seasons and learning, and each plant has individual requirements that you will learn in time. It sounds like you are on the right track, and learnings which crop to plant when to their best advantage sounds like a priority. You may ver...

Wow... I really don't know what of all that to try to respond to. You will get better with trial and error and learning what works for you. I can't tell you how to water, because your climate is so different from anything I have experienced. But to be successful, you will need to get over this: "bu...

Your sunflower that died, was it one that you bought that was already blooming or a seedling you planted from seed? Plants with flowers are not seedlings, just plants or flowering plants. Sunflo...

Re: Sunflower from seeds

You can put those seeds in damp paper towels or toilet paper and see if they sprout. If they do sprout you can plant the sprouted seeds directly in the garden. The garden spot should be watered well before the sprouted seeds are planted and once you plant the seeds the garden area should be watered...

Re: Sunflower from seeds

Sunflowers are not good for small pots or cups because they grow so fast. The roots can grow 6 inches in just a few days. It would be much better to plant sprouted seeds directly in the garden. The 40 to 60 days is the time they take to develop flowers, not time to harvest mature seeds. Mature seed...

Re: Help to start gardening and planting

You have someone else watering your seedlings and planted pots and you don't know how they are doing it? That may be the problem. Some seeds require light in order to sprout. If hard watering covers the seed with too much soil it won't sprout. Hard watering after the seeds germinate will kill the y...

Any temperature above freezing and they can sprout. I have a lot of birdseed sunflowers come up every spring. Re: Help to start gardening and planting

I did look at your photos and garden plan. You need to add the size of your planting area. If you gave it and I didn't see it I apologize. I wouldn't plant the corn because it takes too much room for the little it produces. Corn is very easy to buy here. I would grow the tomatoes and peppers becaus...

The seeds in your picture are most likely giant sunflower seeds. Usually you buy seeds for planting from the garden stores. Maybe the ones from your package will grow, maybe they won't. Re: Sweet corn planting

Yes, I agree with these responses. Corn needs warmth and lots of sun. I always plant corn directly in the ground, not in pots. The organic farm where I did some volunteer work states that corn is easy to grow and will grow anywhere. I don't think that is necessarily true. One thing I know about cor...

Butterfly Lady, did you mean to say 25 meters by 40 meters? I have been growing a small block of corn about 6 feet by 8 feet in recent years with good success. 25 meters by 40 is about 80 some feet by 130 feet. Exactly my point, honestly even my garden isn't that big if it is 25 meters by 40 meters...

Re: Growing Tomatoes for first time

It is better to fill your containers all the way to the top . Fill them up, water it so the soil settles, then fill it again , Your little seedlings are in the shadow of the pot edges. If I fill it then it will bury the seedlings, that may kill it, so I was thinking to wait until it grow little bit...

Re: Sweet corn planting

Corn seed should be spaced about 1/2 meter apart. Most corn needs a lot of room to grow and you'll need at least 50 plants to get proper pollination. So a block of corn would be at least 25 meters long and 40 meters wide. You'll have to have the corn plants separated by rows so you have room to wal...
