Picked 6 ripe tomatoes today, and 4 large starfruit, and 2 heads of buttercrunch lettuce will be harvested tomorrow, as well as a small stalked Pok choy.

Re: My tomatoes are always too small

Let's keep up the discussion. There are a few other reasons that flowers can come and go with no fruits. One is diseases, specifically fungus. The second is insects, thrips will do it, aphids and whiteflies also, and the new little horror on my block: Engytatus Modestus, aka the Tomato Bug. Here's s...

Xt, tomatoes are self pollinating and so mostly that isn't likely to be an issue.

Re: My tomatoes are always to small

Might I suggest to check that the soil in your containers has good drainage. Using actual potting soil instead of mix is a mistake. Also, most people I know get very poor results with the moisture control stuff. It's good for in the ground( not great though) but not for container tomatoes. Doesn't r...

It could be that the tomatoes you threw into the compost were F1 hybrids, and their next generation, which is where all the diversity and segregation starts, was what came up with some cherries. Most store bought tomatoes are hybrids rather than open pollinated. Hybrids will not grow true from their...

Re: Is There a Variety that Surprises You?

Brandywine did the first time I planted it. My friend told me it might not set fruit because the pollen clumps in high humidity but it did fine. Everyone was drawn to it because it was such a huge plant and most of the plants people see here are not the rugosa leafed one. I did have to fungicide it...

Jackfruit can get up to 100 lbs and can rake a year to mature on some varieties. This is the fruit they based the juicy fruit gum flavor on. I learned about all this by going to the Redland's Fruit and Spice Park in Homestead, Fl. Unbelievable place to visit if you ever get down this way. :D

The jalapenoes you bought may have been a hybrid. If so, the seeds are not always true to the parent plant. I grew some this year from seed, but I don't remember if it was seed I saved or seed I bought. I, too, had a few jalapenoes that looked like little tiny bell peppers and they were HOT! all on...

I would do it sooner than later as long as they look to be strong. Some that are more knowledgeable than I say that they adapt to their new surroundings and grow better stronger root systems when smaller, they don't like to let the plants get too tall before transplanting. Late blight is so much more virulent, due to the many billions of spores it produces in a short time. It can take a garden completely down in 2 days in the right humid rainy conditions. The only preventive antifungal is not an organic one. This disease is really bad. I am so sorry for your getting t...

I think it sounds like a good plan either way. They are at the fifth instar when they are about 2" long. Have you tried tapping on their heads? They put out these cool scary antennae for a few seconds. Its protective, since unlike Monarchs, these are not poisonous to predators.
