Dahlias are flopping over

Hi All,

I tried my hand at some firepot dahlias which came up nicely, bloomed once for a few days, then dropped the blooms and keeled over. They are alive, but flopped over and laying on my pool deck. Foliage too heavy for the stalks. Stake them? Trim heavily?

Very few of my dahlia plants go un-staked or without a trellis to grow through.

This is what I mean by a trellis. The plants are so much tied in as "netted." It isn't a very good picture but what I have on this computer. From several years ago:

Staking can be simple. Tie a string every 8 or 10 inches to the stake beginning a foot or two above the soil surface. As the plant grows wrap and tie the string loosely around it.
