Violets

It’s spring! And everywhere I look, I see pansies and violas in the landscaping, tempting me to go buy some for my own garden.

But I’m a little reluctant to get/grow too many pansies and violas because I have these sweetly scented violets — Viola sororia (Common Blue Violet)

I bought them years ago from a small NJ native plants nursery in the Pine Barrens. I’ve nearly lost them twice in the past, so I was ecstatic to find a large patch in bloom this year.

These are intoxicating. I harvested nearly all of the blossoms in the photo, as well as more from other scattered patches. They have been rinsed and are drying in a wire mesh strainer in the kitchen and their fragrance has been filling the downstairs. :D
