Gardening in Australia Qld.

I have been gardening for a few years , however keeping ahead of the pest is surely a ongoing battle . I guess all gardeners have the same issues no matter where the garden is .sugar cane molases is often used to spray on (diluted) to keep some pest away , esp. flies .
At the moment we are entering a community garden competition arranged by the council.
Is there such competitions there . What are the piizes?
Growing potatoes is my main focus at the moment , not that easy to get a really large and good tubers , it'is usually to dry , too hot , too wet or a root disease is causing problems . Growing in towers has proved to be helpfull using a mix of soil and straw to fill the tower as the plant grows . A mix of potatoe types has not been that helpfull.
Keeping the soil moist has got most plants to about nine weeks of growth however the end product after this is not very rewarding as the spuds are usually small. Seasol sprayed(sea weed spray ) onto the plants occasionly do make them nice and green .
Some helpfull ideas would be appreciated.
