What's happening to my roses and other flowers??

They look sick! And something seems to be biting holes in them? Notice the white spots all over. And the roses just die immediately and fall.

If you are located in similar area as me, those white thin/windowpane spots are due to sawfly maggots/Rose slugs. Look underneath the leaves and you will find green caterpillar-like larvae with amber heads. They scrape the leaf surface and eventually make holes.

The flowerbuds in the photo might be being eaten by Japanese beetles. Sometimes you will find they chew holes from the side and crawl inside the bud. Look for black frass/poop and black liquid splatter.


I'm curious -- 3rd and 4th photos -- that isn't a rose, right? It looks like an herbaceous plant, but I don't recognize it.

Yes, sorry the 3rd and 4th are a Dahlia -- but they happen to be planted next to one another and both were dying, so I was hoping to get help with them too.

What do you suggest is a good way to repel those pests?
