Did I trim it too short?

There's always been a big cane on one side of my rose bush that I didn't like. It came that way, I was always too nervous to trim it up, so I just left it. Well, it looks to have Blackspot now, so I decided to go ahead and cut it back, and then spray it down. I got happy and cut the big cane off just a couple inches from the shank. Will that kill it?
