dead heading of roses

This is a real dumb question but, how do you dead head roses? how far down the stem do you cut ? I go 3 sets of leaves under the wilted bud, but then it seems to stall any new buds. Can anyone help me ?= darkblue][/color] :?:

Hello chickinslo. Ken here in the Chicago area. First of all, no question is dumb
if you don't know the answer. What I do is prune back to the first five-leaflet.
You get a better re-bloom than if you go to a three-leaflet. If all you have is
three-leaflets, then prune to the second three-leaflet. Good luck and take care.

okay, my rose stems although have no leaves are flowers, are still extremely long, I'd say a good 3 -4 feet and a inch thick in diameter, should I cut this back all the way, or just see what it does over the next week or so. I just transplanted it from backyard to a pot, where it had been growing for years.
