Need Advice on Pruning a Climber Rose

I was neglectful of my roses due to surgery. I am back in the swing of things now and I need some advise on pruning a climber rose. I have no clue what to do. The canes are very thick and strong. How far back should I prune it? It is about 6.5 ft. tall. Any help is appreciated.

I was thinking I had to prune it back b/c there are no leaves in the lower part of the bush, so the rose looked funny. Someone (who meant well) told me to prune it down so it would encourage new growth. I've cut a little over 1/3 down. Please tell me I did the right thing!!

Thank you so much for the advise. I am going to see how it does it the spring. Someone told me we are in for a harsh winter (they went deer hunting and said that the buck had lots of fat - a sign of a bad winter to come ?? ) so I am adding more mulch to prepare.
