Companion plants for lilacs?

I will be putting in some lilacs and with the need for between 8-12' of spacing between plants (as identified as mature width or spread), what can I do to fill in those areas while the lilacs grow?

They will be planted in the back of the garden (because they are tall) so anything I put in between the plants would need to be fairly tall too to be seen?

Thanks.

Oh I live in East Central WI, zone 4.

Think tall perennials, like some of your native sunflowers or tall rudebeckias...easy to move as the lilacs hit their stride...
