Compare to tansy / Tanacetum vulgare.

Thanks Purple. The foliage certainly matches up.
By searching I've found that there are many Tanacetum
with white in their flowers.

Happy to suggest. If it's tansy, you might want to keep it in a pot.

because it spreads aggressively from the roots.

I had one that I wanted in a flower bed. I planted the tansy in a nursery pot and then planted the pot in the bed, so it would look like it was growing there. The tansy roots promptly escaped out the drainage holes at the bottom of the pot and the tansy took over the flower bed anyway!

If it is, it would have yellow, button flowers:

No, no flowers yet. The member who gave them away
at the Garden Club meeting said they got white flowers.
She did not know the name of the plant.

If you rub the leaves do they have a strong herby smell? It also reminded me of Tansy, but the leaves should be very aromatic which would be a good indicator. The white flowers throw me though...

My MIL gave me some tansy from her mother's garden but she didn't know what it was. Once I got an ID on the plant and saw just how aggressively it grew in a single season I ended up digging it all up. I felt a bit bad due to the sentimental value, but didn't feel too bad as I dug and realized how extensive the roots had already become over such a short period of time.
