Is This a Mushroom?

I have some snapdragons on my front patio in pots, and I noticed some little ball-shaped things in the pot. At first, I thought they might be eggs, because they looked almost cracked open. But when I scooped them out, they seemed attached at the base, so we're thinking mushrooms. Does anybody know what these are?!

Oh cool! I believe they are actually called "Birds Nest" Mushrooms (or fungi). My kids and I saw them during a mushroom walk in fall a couple of years ago, but they hadn't opened yet.
