green beans

something is killing my green beans. it is boring/ eating into the stem just below the ground level. The stem swells just below the attack site and the stem begins to turn brown and proceeds up the stem until the plant dies. Some plants had not hardly gotten out of the ground before they died. Any Ideas :(

It is probably a vine borer. Like the dreaded squash vine borer, the bean borer is the larvae of a moth. See publication for details.
