Is this cutworm or vine borer damage?

This is a squash plant- some of them (that haven't been dug up and killed by a chipmunk/gopher/who knows that I described in another thread) are showing 'split' stems and falling over. The leaves look healthy, just the stem is split.

I sure got some squash issues! :)

Does not look like typical vine borer damage, which leaves the stem intact just with a hole in it and sawdusty looking stuff outside the hole. Maybe cutworm or maybe the same thing that was eating the other ones -- the stem looks chewed.

I'm actually told by some that have seen it that it's just overwatered. Make sense?

I've noticed this before on some of my plants. It tends to occur when it has been dry and we get a heavy rain. It doesn't seem to affect the plants though.

Overwatering can make plants yellowish (from nutrients being flushed out) and wilty. It can't chew the stem off.
