Stains or Stripes On Banana Peppers

I had a few in ground banana peppers exibit this staining or stripes shown in the photo below last year. I didn't eat the peppers that had the stains.

This year I have 22 plants in a different location this year and they are doing fine. The plant in the photo is an experiment where I planted it into a pot. Granted the pot is probably small but I have three other plants in larger containers but no peppers on them yet as they were planted later.

What is causing the staining and are they ok to consume?

Thanks,
Scarecrow
