Aloe Vera plant growing vertically

Why is my aloe vera plant growing straight up instead of filling out? It's shoot has layers of leaves in sections above one another much like a vertical time line and is now too long to hold itself up and I'm afraid of it snapping off. I've never seen one grow like this and after spending over an hour Googling it I still have no answer as to why this happened, how to change it's growth pattern and how to prevent it's pups from growing the same way. Please advise. Thank you!

Hi, sorry for the delay. I'm not sure if I'm doing this right but I've, hopefully, uploaded some pics via Photobucket.

1st pic: Aloe Vera7; Is of the plant as it's being held up. It was originally planted in those standard/basic 2g black plastic planters that you get when you purchase a plant or tree from Home Depot. There was some settling of the dirt but not a whole lot so why the continual growth upward is beyond me.

2nd pic: Aloe Vera1; I tried to show it at a different angle and used a spray can to give an idea as to how long it is. 20" not including the roots.

3rd pic: Aloe Vera6; Here I am trying to show that the roots of the pups seem to be part of the mother plant. The only way I can see to separate them would be to snap off as much root as I can for each one which I don't really want to do.

So, any suggestions on what to do with this plant? I thought about suspending a make-shift sun-blocker above it so that it would maybe grow out from the sides. I'm open to ideas. Thanks so much!

My best guess is that it's not getting enough light and is stretching out.
Could you post a photo? instructions are in the Tips and Suggestions.
