Help establishing a lawn in the mediteranean?

Hi all,

Newbie here, so please go easy on me :)

I recently bought a run down small holding near the Mediteranean Sea, we have a lawn (of sorts) that my kids love to play on, but it is in a terrible state and too small

I have rough plans to enlarge the area, level it off properly (full of pot holes at the moment), make the best of the soil we have, install irrigation, and establish a new lawn with the best type of seed for our location/use

So, as you might expect, I have lots of questions...

My initial concern is with the soil we have, it seems fertile enough but is clay like, when moist it's quite nice, but in the summer it bakes rock hard, with irrigation this will hopefully improve but I would like to take reasonable steps to improve the soil and was planning on digging in a few tons of horse manure to break the soil up and hopefully retain water better

Is this a good idea to start with?

If yes, then is there anything else I should consider doing at this point?

Thanks
