Gutter Garden Herbs

Hi,

I have a surplus piece of guttering that I've fixed to a fence and was planning to use to plant some herbs in, maybe some chives and thyme.

As the guttering is only around 3 inches deep however will that be sufficient depth?

Thanks, Arran

There was a project that used gutters for a demo garden fence planter. The gutter was fine for shallow rooted plants like strawberries and pansies. The biggest issue with them was watering. They don't have a lot of soil volume and dry out very quickly. Some had to be watered 2-3 times a day. We put soaker tubes in them and put it on a timer. When the plants were small once a day was fine, but as the plants got bigger they needed to have the watering times increased.
