Garlic

I planted store bought cloves of garlic last fall. It made it through the winter and seems to be growing quite well. The green part (not sure what it's callled  ) is 1 1/2 to 2 feet tall. Do I cut that back at anytime or just let it keep growing? Also, how do you know when it's ready to be picked or dug up?

Just let it grow. When the bottom third of the top growth turns brown, loosen and lift the plants and clean off loose dirt. Allow the plants to dry for a week or two, then trim roots and cut the top and inch or two above the bulb, and remove the dirty outer layer. The bulbs will then be ready to store until use.

I live in Maryland. When IS the right time to plant garlic? I would probably like to put it into a container, but I could also put it into my garden in the fall if that is when it sould be started? And do you plant a single clove?? Plant with or without the "paper" skin on it?

Plant a single clove, the larger the better. Leave the skin in place. Here is S.C. October or November is the ideal planting time. I would expect the Maryland planting date to be about a month earlier. When the ground temperature gets cool enough it will trigger the clove to sprout.

Here are a couple of sites with good growing information:
