elephant ears
Last year my girlfriend and I planted Black Elephant Ears in a 14" pot on our sunlit balcony and they did okay considering we started them in late July. I'm wondering if there are any helpful tricks I could use to get them to their full glory this season.
They should do better this year since they have the whole year to get going. Make sure your pots are large enough, and definitely well-watered (not soggy, depending on the variety). These are tropical plants - the wild versions grow near swampy areas - the cultivated versions are fine in sandy soil (provided they get water daily). They are pretty trouble-free plants, really. I'm not sure how humid your summers are, but the more humid, the better for them.
