Just thought I'd show some pictures of a few of my 30 or so containers:

this one is looking kind of green right now, it's snapdragon, petunia, dusty miller, geranium, mostly not blooming yet.

this is a hanging basket ivy, marigold, lobelia, dusty miller, a petunia not blooming yet, and a cardinal climber not blooming yet, climbing up the basket support.

It's early in the season, these will get better as the trailing stuff trails more and the blooming stuff blooms more and everything gets taller and fuller and bushier.

A lot of my containers are stuffed full of herbs and some have house plants that come outdoors for the growing season.

I can have all this because it is all started from seed in my basement. If I had to buy all those plants, I couldn't afford it.

Wow. I was going to ask if you grew them from seed. They look great! Very healthy and well-grown. Your deck is going to be (already is) BEAUTIFUL.

Well, to be strictly honest, almost all started from seed. The ivy (which I would NEVER plant in the ground!) and the grass I bought.

Tomatoes are supposed to be shorter varieties -- 3~4' at most: Black Krim and Earl of Edgecombe. I have some Black Seeded Simpson seedlings started so I think I'll plant one each in the corners in the shade of the window box, maybe add a nasturtium or basil in the front sunnier corner of @. Window box contains Golden Summer Hybrid bell peppers.

Longer window box with one Golden Summer hybrid bell pepper in the middle and two Ancho Poblano peppers on either end. Sowed some parsley seeds in between. These are supposed to add a little extra privacy for the patio.

I usually avoid container growing, so I'm completely out of practice. I may remember by the end of the season why I prefer to grow in the ground.

I don't know how everyone does this regularly and in larger quantities though. It took three wheelbarrows of soil I mixed from compost, bagged compost, sand, top soil dug from under leaf piles, and remaining 1/2 large bag of potting soil, and I still didn't have enough. I've mulched the tomatoes with bagged compost but need to top off the window boxes.

Wouldn't it be fun if everyone posted update photos later on to show how the the plants grew and filled out/up the containers?

Thank u for sharing I am new to gardening and have never tried a forum before either but I will defintely try to get some photos posted of my stuff I really want to get into growing things from seed I don't even want to know what I have spent so far

So far my experiment with growing squash in a container on the deck is doing well. Remains to be seen if it will fruit, but it is beautifully ornamental:

Another update -- Black Krim bit the dust. I encountered a new tomato pest this year -- Tomato Stem Borer -- and three of my tomatoes were affected, of which BK was one of them

I cut it down and transplanted a Falstaff purple Brussels sprouts seedling. Also sowed some Karina peas and carrots:

I also planted a Violetto purple cauliflower between the peppers.
There are other seedlings in pots hanging out along the edges waiting to be transplanted elsewhere. (actually, the bigger Falstaff in a pot was planted in the ground yesterday in a reserved space that had opened up after onions were harvested)

applestar, your plants are as always exceptionally healthy and productive AND beautiful. If there is still anyone that has any doubt that organic gardening works AT LEAST as well as gardening with chemicals, they just need to look at your pictures. I love how there is always so much going on in your garden. I take it the little pots sitting in the big planters are things that are getting ready to get planted elsewhere?

Yes, the little pots are just waiting around for their permanent beds to be prepared.even at this size, they are constantly harassed by cabbageworms, and it's easier to pick them up and inspect.

This is a Yellow Bell tomato planted in the ground. It's actually still producing fruits in spite of the borer.

Glad to hear it is still producing... jeez tomato stem borer is SUCH bad news. If it's anything like as virulent as the squash vine borer, I might have to give up gardening!

I don't have any vision when it comes to flowers, but hopefully by the end of summer I'll have something in that department.

Here's a few pics from the 2013 fall container veggie garden. This was our first foray away from the store-bought pepper and tomato starts of prior years. I harvested something nearly every day through January. This year is 10 times more ambitious.

Here's the early 2014 salad garden. Hubby built me new salad boxes that can hang on the walls of the greenhouse (aka plant fortress). The runoff waters the strawberry baskets until I can figure out how to recycle it better. I didn't think the boxes held enough plants, so he built more. I've got six now, but 2 are earmarked for herbs.

All of these are really nice but I really like that marigold, lobelia, blue fescue grass, and deep magenta petunia mix especially the color contrast. Some ideas for sure.

Right now, my two windowboxes have Little Marvel peas, lettuce, spinach, arugula, and what's left of last fall planted Egyptian onions in them. And the peas have started to bloom.
Once peas are done, I'm planting Blush and Maglia Rosa tomatoes in the 36" and some peppers in the 48".

I happened to open this up to p. 1 and noticed that the pictures I posted to start this thread got disappeared, because I renamed the album. So here's a few of them, plus a few new ones:

I'm going to post this in my garden thread but thought I'd share here, too. There's some Love Lies Bleeding, butternut squash, a bunch of flowers I can't name, some geraniums, thai basil, and mint (might be hard to see, off to the left).

I just really like this assemblage at the edge of my raised bed.

I haven't been on my computer more than ten minutes in three weeks, and I think I forgot how to type...

This is pretty simple and still not fully developed compared to the gorgeous examples that have been posted here, but this was my first time growing petunias from seeds and I'm liking the effect of the combination with Firetail chenille and the honeyvine milkweed growing on the trellis. (...wow I should scrub that arch trellis... )

Such beautiful displays from everyone, they really do all look lovely. I am in awe of you.

I was sipping coffee on my deck this morning and looked at my yearly annual planter . I put color in this every year for the deck . It is an old fountain that got cracked and leaky from freezing the first winter So It now is used as a planter .
This years combination Is the best ever , Viola's , Snapdragons , Marigolds and Impatiens have just made a wonderful blend that dazzles !!

I'm afraid I won't be planting much annuals this year -- got WAY caught up with starting seeds of tomatoes and peppers and eggplants, too. Somehow didn't get around to starting flower seeds -- not even marigolds So I will be enjoying the color show vicariously -- looking forward to seeing everyone's pictures

I'll post pics of my container vegs later on when they are a bit more attractive.
