Blackberries/ Raspberries

We have alot of weeds in and around our berries.. I thought I did a good job clearing out all of the over growth of weeds as well as old shoots last fall, but now it looks as though I did nothing? How aggressive should I have been with thinning them out?

I used pine straw mulch around my berry plants, and it seems to get most weeds and keep them controlled. Recommend pretty thick layer of it, as broadleaf plantain grew through anything less than an inch thick of mulch.
