Tulip trees are droppibg leaves What could it be????

I have several poplar/tulip trees in my yard. The loosing leaves like cracy. Actually it is the tips of the branches, with the leaves and some flowers. They look healthy but there're all around the trees. I'm use to them dropping in july with the hot weether. But this is May and we've had quite of bit of rain and no wind. These trees are nearing 24" diameter and maybe 80 feet of more. Could an animal be doing this? We have lots of critters here.

Anybody now this?

Sounds like a twig girdler, which is an insect that chews a ring around a tend young bud twig to create habitat for egg laying and larvae development. Kinda bothersome but probably no real harm done.
