2 Hazelnut tree questions

I'm wanting to get 3 Hazelnut trees to put around the house and I'm wondering how close to each other they need to be for pollination? And I also read something that has me puzzled, it said something about male and female trees. How are you supposed to tell if a tree is male or female?

I believe hazlenuts are monoecious - both sexes on each plant...so you shouldn't need to worry about male vs. female plants...can't really help as far as spacing goes...if you're going to buy the bushes, you should be able to get that kind of cultural info from the place you buy 'em.

As they pollinate themselves, THAT spacing isn't necessary...

What variety or species?

According to The Arbor Day Foundation they are called Corylus americana, American Hazelnut.

Cool, the native form; I'd call that less a tree, more of a big shrub...

Dirr lists C. americana at 8-10' with a 15-18' spread. 15-18' apart it is...

That's a perfect size for where I intend to plant them. It was one of the deciding factors when I chose them. How big do they generally have to get before they start producing nuts?

2-3 years after planting should be your first fruits, so likely 6-8'...
