Tall vs. Small

I planted a variety of heirloom tomatoes this year and some of them are doing great while others are just taking their time to grow. Some of the plants are tall and green and very healthy with lots of tomatoes and others that are just a few feet away that are the same variety are small and not looking so good. What is going on?

It may be just natural selection. As in all nature there are variations in vigour and the strongest survive.

There can also be a great deal of variation in soil, climate etc. over just a few feet of ground. If they are all smaller in the same area I would be inclined to think there is something like rubble or a tree root or similiar in the ground in that particular area or a funnel of wind hits that area more. I could of course be completely wrong!!
