This question can and will get you a multitude of answers, and most all will be correct. Because people will be posting what works for them.

I'm a 5-1-1 guy. That is 5 parts bark fines to 1 parts of Perlite and peatmoss.

There are cheaper ways to go such as dirt and much more expensive ways such as potting mix and all types of combos of stuff so you will have to decide which way to go for your personal situation.

I find 5-1-1 to be fairly cheap but also a better mix than some of the more expensive ways to go, but that's just me. I'll not trying to pull anyone away from what works for them.
