I have the Japanese version and it's really great. They've released an English version so now I can share. You check it when the season changes -- it will send a notification every new season. I have mine set for badge only.
It takes a while to open on the iPad so will probably take extra time to open on iPod.
It shows a produce and flower in season. (Right now -- Winter Melon and Sunflower) and an "animal" in season (Evening Cicada)
Webmaster (and other fishing enthusiasts) might find it interesting, too, for the fish in season and how they are served -- with photos. (Right now, it's Hamachi/Yellowtail).
It also has an appropriate Haiku for the season and explains it.
