Help needed

[Acer Palmatum]

Hello, I am just beginning my Bonsai experience and I was hoping for some useful advice. I recently purched a Japanese maple and an Azalea from a local nursery. I was wondering how I should begin to train then as bonsai. when I should repot my new plants, if and when I should trim the roots and branches. I have read through many books, but the instructions are vague. I was hoping someone could give me an overview of how to begin to train my plants.
