Ken,

I've been looking around for you but have not found anything that is really inspiring. I'm not endorsing anything here just offering a few possibilities.

And of course E-bay

Look for trunks with girth, movement and taper, branches can readily be re-grown. Avoid the exaggerated "S" shape unless you really like that style or see something that you can work with in a tree like that.

Ken,

No particular cultural reason. Many growers feel that they look contrived and have a pronounced "Mallsai" look about them. They prefer more natural looking trees. But it is, of course, your decision.

Unless I am mistaken that tree is only representative of what you will receive. You will get a different tree in that size range, you are actually buying "sight unseen". Also don't overlook the fact that spending a few more dollars up front gains you years of development. Good luck, and let us know what you end up with.

thanks again norm.. I think that I will try to stick to one with a not so exaggerated S in the trunk. I appreciate the help. I will post pics as soon as I get one! :D

arboricola,

[rant begins]
IMO
You are either very very very new [If so do check out more shopping options - For your own good] to bonsai or you Work for/own that site [Considering your single solitary post here has an irrelevant question & has a commercial link in it...I am leaning towards the second]

Considering the {anti}quality of the trees in question & their prices.

I can think of absolutely no reason anyone would possibly suggest that buying a tree from there is a good idea.

Consider: $200 for this https://joebonsai.com/shop/product_info.php?products_id=776&cPath=1_45

You have got to be kidding me.... A $200 slingshot :evil:

Thanks for the welcome...No, I do not work for that company or any other..
It's just one of the hundreds of retail sites that are on the internet. Some are good and some are not, but you should look at them all. I added this site to the two others mentioned for comparison only. In bonsai you usually get what you pay for, but not always. You are right, it pays to look around..

Arboricola, LOL

I am officially apologising, [Upon re-reading] That sounded harsher than I intended.

[The brevety was due to a lack of of time to respond I assure you.

We do get a fair amount of 'commercial one hit adverts [W/ links included]' on here though. Though very few of them are bonsai related]

And WELCOME! 8).

In bonsai you usually get what you pay for, but not always.
IMO this is a good example of 'not always'... No obvious training in evidence most have no potential either.

Only my opinion but I see that site as a place where people who know absolutely nothing about bonsai get very very little for their investment.

Mind you I understand completely that this has little to do with how happy one is with their purchase.... To each their own...

BREAK IT UP PEOPLE

yes I am happy with my tree.. I actually bought my juniper from joebonsai at a reasonable price.. but ynot is correct.. it was not in the greatest of health when I got it and it took some work to get it back to good!

I have posted some good pics after I got it in the gallery forum and the elm advice gnome, ynot, and joe forum as well!
