I would say, the best way to decide which bonsai you want to start with, is to do some research on different types. also, is it going to be an inside or outside bonsai? if its inside only, your choises are going to be limited. if its outside, what type of climate do u live in?

The limit to what you can grow indoors is actually MUCH larger than the limit to what you can grow outdoors for many people. Availability of specimens for outdoor growth is limited to those trees that will survive, year round, within your climate zone. Indoors, however, you can grow many specimens from as far north as USDA zone 8 or 9, all the way down to full tropicals. Because tropicals can more easily be grown in greenhouses and such, there is a greater diversity of species available, even if they're not common. Just compare Ficus to Acer, for an easy example.
