bonsai tree

I bought my husband a small bonsai , don't know what kind it is. I was in Manchester and there was a stall in the centre selling them.
It looked very healthy, I was told to water it once a week leaving it standing in water for half an hour. we did this but the leaves are starting to drop off. Can you advice me , If it helps I could send you a photo .
thanks ( new member )

Post pictures if you can - it helps for identifying your plant.

Likely problem is that watering techniques vary considerably. I NEVER allow my bonsai to sit in water. Fast draining soil is very important with potted trees to prevent root rot.

Best guess before seeing it? Chinese Elm, but that's a wild shot in the dark based on your description of its behavior post-acquisition and it could be anything really. Unless we can id the plant, we can't really help.
