Best trees for bonsai training in the desert

Hello there. I have been really interested in starting a couple bonsais, however, I live in Phoenix AZ, so it gets pretty hot here. Do you have any recommendations for good plants here in the desert?

Look around the area for the trees that might work. Mesquite, palo verde, and ocotillo all sound like possibilities to me, and even shrubs like mormon tea and brittlebush could be used. I always thought that Joshua tree would be an interesting bonsai; not entirely sure it would work or not, but experimentation is a key part of bonsai development, so be the first in the block and be sure to report back here so we can all try it later...
