Help with my new bonsai.

I recently purchased a juniper bonsai tree and its browning, and I have no clue what to do. I have been keeping it out side, and I have been watering only when I think it needs it. I'm not sure if the tree is dead or dying...Help please...

brutelord,

The coloring of the pictures makes it difficult to judge this trees health but my feeling is that it is not dead or in immediate danger. It is correct to keep it outside. The soil is typical and not really what I would like to see with a Juniper. Watering it in this type of soil is kind of difficult, there is a tendency to keep it too wet as the dense peaty medium retains a lot of water. Try using the toothpick/chopstick method to judge the moisture, you'll find it outlined here. You can also mist the tree which should help.

In the short term locate it in a bright location but out of direct afternoon sun. When it begins to show new growth you can move it into a more open position. BTW, please give us some idea of your location and weather.

Well you have eased my worried mind. The soil and pot came with the tree. Should I re-pot? Thank you for the suggestions.

I live in southwest Missouri. The climate is pretty much the same as Japan's.
